Nyonya & Baba

From the first time I have been staying in Singapore (around end of 2008) until now, I tried many types of cuisines (Western food, Italian food, Korean food, Japanese food, Indonesian food, Singapore food, etc). But I almost never tried Singapore Peranakan food.

If I am not wrong, I only had tried to eat Singapore Peranakan food at 2 different restaurant and this is my first Singapore Peranakan food article on this blog.

I feel a bit sorry as I should try local dishes more than other country's food in Singapore. I will do more hunting on Singapore Peranakan food from now on (hope it's not an empty promise from me :p).

In this article, I will review about Nyonya & Baba restaurant. This restaurant is located at Vivo City Mall.

We try Buah Keluak Fried Rice, Nyonya Mee and Chendol.

Buah Keluak Fried Rice is a fried rice mixed with Buah Keluak and they put a lot of crispy anchovies on the top of fried rice. Buah Keluak make this fried rice become a black colour.

For the taste wise, you may expect slight bitter taste that comes from Buah Keluak. Even though a bit bitter, Buah Keluak Fried Rice is delicious and crispy anchovies make the taste perfect.

FYI, Keluak a.k.a Pangium Edule is a tree that grows on the mangrove swamps of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea). This tree produces a large poisonous fruit (also called the football fruit). Event though it's a poisonous fruit, this fruit become edible by fermentation.

Buah Keluak Fried Rice S$13.00

Nyonya Mee is a noodles filled with streaky pork, shrimps and garnished with Chinese parsley and spring onions. It is served with pineapple, cucumber sauce and pounded chilli.

This Nyonya Mee is not bad and best to eat while it's hot. Pineapple, cucumber sauce and pounded chilli is also nice.

Please be noted that both dishes portion are quite big. It can be eaten for two people. They also serve us the Crackers and Achar.

Crackers and Achar

From my experience after trying both main dishes at the same time, I suggest you will not make the same mistake as me :) Eating both fried rice and noodle at the same time are really not the best combination unless you have a big appetite. We were very full after finishing both dishes.

I also like the Chendol. It has sweet taste and refreshing.

Chendol S$5.50

Will I go there again? Yes.

Looking for a retro place to hang out around Dakota Crescent area? You may try Tian Kee & Co.

Tian Kee & Co is a café that is decorated with a lot of vintage things from around 70th - 80th. If you were born in these era, this was a good place for you that was confirmed it would bring back your childhood memories.

Over there, I ordered Rainbow Cheesecake and Peppermint Iced Nutella.

Rainbow Cheesecake is one of the favourite dessert at Tian Kee & Co café. The taste is delicious. This cake also has beautiful colour which is confirmed becoming a must-order-cake among ladies to put the picture on their Instagram.

Rainbow Cheesecake S$7.50

If you are a peppermint lover, you may want to try Peppermint Iced Nutella. The peppermint taste is quite strong. So sorry, since I am not a Peppermint lover, this Peppermint Iced Nutella is not my cup of tea.

Sinpopo Brand

Looking for a delicious cakes around Joo Chiat road? You may try to visit Sinpopo Brand restaurant.

We find this restaurant while doing food hunting along Joo Chiat road.

At first, we don't know Sinpopo Brand restaurant is a famous restaurant. We went to this place because of their restaurant interior. It looks cozy.

After browsing internet, we find out that this restaurant famous for their cakes. The "Must Try" cake which is Gula Melaka Cake. Other than Gula Melaka Cake, the waitress also recommends us to try Pandan Tart.

Gula Melaka Cake is indeed delicious. It has a unique taste.

Pandan Tart is also delicious. I bet they are using a real Pandan to make this cake. This cake is similar like egg tart. The difference is they are using Pandan instead of egg as a filling.

Based on the cakes that I try, I feel that it's worth to visit this restaurant even though it's quite far from MRT station.

Will I go there again? Yes.

Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh

Many people said "No matter how far restaurant / food stall is located, it will be always crowded as long as the food is delicious". It's true indeed. They will be surely willing to travel long distance to satisfy their appetites.

One of the place that belongs to this category is Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh. Can you imagine? Although it's located very far from mrt station, this place is almost every time full packed.

How do I know of this place? My colleague tell me about it. Because of my curiosity, I visited this place.

Over there, I ordered Sin Heng`s Special Claypot Bak Koot Teh, Claypot Noodle and Youtiau.

Sin Heng`s Special Claypot Bak Koot Teh $8.00 (small portion)

Sin Heng`s Special Claypot Bak Koot Teh is made with fresh ingredients, simmered in rich stock of Chinese herbs and spices. It's more than 20 years of history. It's delicious. The meat is also tender.

Claypot Noodle S$6.00

Claypot Noodle also is not bad. But for me, it's better to try their Bak Koot Teh than Claypot Noodle especially if this is the first time you visit this restaurant. Unless, if you have been here before or if you have a big appetite to try Claypot Noodle for second round :)

Will I go there again? Yes.

Looking for a delicious food for lunch / dinner but lazy to cook or buy outside? You may consider to do order delivery for Golden Pillow Curry Chicken Bun.

This Golden Pillow Curry Chicken Bun is delicious. For me, this Golden Pillow Curry Chicken Bun is a unique dish. They are so clever to invent this dish. Basically, they hide the curry chicken inside a bun. Below are some pictures to make you have a better understanding about my explanation.

Happy eating with maximum $5 at Wei Sam (Charcoal) Hong Kong Style Roasted

Did you remember I wrote about delicious prawn noodle in Mohamed Sultan area last week? Actually, nice foods around Mohamed Sultan area is not only that one. It's still have other stalls that sells delicious food to satisfy our taste bud.

The other stalls that I will review today is Wei Sam (Charcoal) Hong Kong Style Roasted stall. This stall is located just beside prawn noodle stall.

Wei Sam (Charcoal) Hong Kong Style Roasted is selling Roasted Chicken, Soya Sauce Chicken, Roasted Duck and Roasted Cha Siew. Those dishes come with either rice, noodle or kway teow.

A little story of mine, this stall is located nearby my office, so I frequently take away my lunch from this stall and eat at office.  I ever try their chicken rice, cha sew rice and chicken kway teow. All the dishes are tasty.

For the sake of this article, I wake up earlier than usual only to have breakfast before going to work. It's because this place doesn't have a big space and always crowded during lunch time.  It's difficult to find a seat to sit and put my camera bag.

This time, I order roasted chicken rice. The rice is fragrant and tasty. The chicken is tender enough. This delicious chicken rice price is S$3.30. Quite affordable, right?

Will I go there again? Yes.

Happy eating with maximum $5 at Delicious Foods

Looking for a delicious Hokkien Prawn Mee around Mohamed Sultan area? You may try Hokkien Prawn Mee at Delicious Foods  food stall.

In this place, they have 4 different portions: teenager portion (S$4.00), queen portion (S$5.00), king portion (S$6.00) and luxurious portion (S$7.00).

I order teenager portion of dry Hokkien Prawn Mee. Although this is the smallest portion that they offer, but it's not considered small portion at all. Don't believed me? You may try yourself :)

Dry Hokkien Prawn Mee comes with a small bowl of soup.

Perhaps you are wondering " where do I get that S$4 cheap?". It's still considered cheap because it's located nearby Robertson quay, Liang Court and Mohamed Sultan road. The second reason is because they give a lot of prawn and the soup itself is rich of prawn essence.

Other than Hokkien Prawn Mee, they also sell Nyonya Laksa, Baba Mee Siam and Meng Nan Lor Mee.

Will I go there again? Yes.

They have a few types of bun for you to try. I choose Bacon and Egg Bun. They also add mayonnaise inside the bun. It's so delicious. FYI, don't ever request to not add the mayonnaise. It's because this mayonnaise makes the taste perfectly to this bun.

Other than that, they also have Soft Bun. My sister orders Soft Bun set meal. This set meal comes with the drink and egg.  There are kaya and butter inside the soft bun. The butter is so thick and the kaya is delicious.

Happy eating with maximum $5 at Wanton Noodle stall (Read this to find out about the shop name)

Yeah finally it's Friday.  For this week's Happy Eating with maximum S$5 topic, I will show you one unique stall that sells delicious wanton noodle that will make you drool and drool again.

Why do I say this stall is unique? It’s because of their name. Although the stall name is Teck Mei Hainanese Chicken Rice, they don't sell chicken rice at all. Instead, they sell wanton noodle, lor mee and prawn noodle. Unique right?

Curios why it's like that? Ok, I will tell you the whole story behind this unique name. Teck Mei Hainanese Chicken Rice was belong to the previous seller who sold chicken rice. After a few years, Teck Mei Hainanese Chicken Rice didn't continue to run the business here.  So this stall is occuped by the new seller and they are selling wanton noodle.

Although the seller is already changed and they sell different type of foods, I don't know why the new seller never replaces the old sign name with the new one. Until today, the new seller still use the old stall signboard.

Anyway, I don't realize about this until I start writing this post. Luckily my sister's colleague knows about this story, so I don't give you wrong information :)

Now the only problem is neither me or my sister's colleague knows the real name of this wanton noodle stall. But don't worry, I will provide the stall address and the old signboard name so you can easily find this stall.

Ok, now let's back to the review.

Over there, I and my sister try dry wanton noodle, dry wanton lau shu fen and dumpling.

Just for your information, these dishes are a dark brown version of wanton noodle and wanton lau shu fen. I believed it's quite hard to find dark brown version in Singapore. But please forgive for my ignorance if the dark brown version is common in Singapore :)

Even though we order the dry one, these dishes are not too dry. It's because they put quite a lot of dark brown sauce into it. So, you will be able to mix the noodle and lau shu fen properly to make the taste even better. We like these dishes so much. It's very tasty.

Guess how much does it cost? S$2.50 for wanton noodle/lau shu fen and 50cents for big dumpling.  Cheap right?  The only challenging part is that this stall is not located near MRT station.

Will I go there again? Absolutely yes.
