Chicken Village

Today I want to show you a unique dish that I had found when I am visiting Jakarta. It is Beggar Chicken.

FYI, Beggar chicken is a famous dish from Changshu - China. This dish contains of chicken wrapped in lotus leaves and covered with a clay. After covered with clay, they will bake it with hot coals until the clay is hardened. Nowadays, beggar chicken is considered a staple of Chinese Haute cuisine.

Beggar Chicken IDR186.000

Curious why do they named it Beggar Chicken? Some says there is a story behind Beggar Chicken. Long time ago, there was one poor beggar who found wild chicken and he planned to eat it without telling anybody. So he built a fire, put the chicken into the hot coals and covered the chicken with the mud. In this condition, the chicken fragrance would trapped in the mud, so no one would know about the chicken. But, a luck was not on the poor beggar when he started to eat the chicken.  One noble traveler smelled the chicken and the beggar was kind enough to share the chicken with him. The chicken was so delicious so the traveler keen to learn from the beggar on how to make this chicken. Eventually this cooking method made it all the way into the Imperial Court. Because of that, they named this chicken dish 'Beggar Chicken'.

We eat this Beggar Chicken at Chicken Village restaurant. Because it takes a long time to make this dish, you may only able to order Beggar Chicken after lunch hour and they only have limited Beggar Chicken quantity every day.

The chicken is very tender and fragrant. The fragrant is coming from the Chinese herbal ingredient that they put into the chicken. This Beggar Chicken is incredibly delicious indeed.

The presentation of the way that they serve Beggar Chicken in Chicken village restaurant is so creative. They bring a Chicken shape clay and wood hammer. After that, the waitress starts to hit the clay with a wood hammer. After it cracks, you can see the chicken wrapped in 2 wrapper: aluminum foil and lotus leaves. Below are some of the pictures and video on how they serve the Beggar Chicken.

Oceans of Seafood

Are you a seafood lovers? If yes, I believe you have heard or even tried eating seafood at Oceans of Seafood. Located at PasarBella Singapore, Ocean of Seafood offers the freshest seafood from around the world (Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.K and Norway) that definitely will make you satisfy.

Anyway, I have a good news for you, from now until 30 March 2014, PasarBella comes to Marina Bay Sands for i Light Marina Bay 2014 show. You can have a dinner here before watching the show.

I visited Oceans of Seafood last Saturday evening and ordered Lobster Pasta.

Lobster Pasta has pasta with tomato sauce, cheese, fish roe, vegetables and lobster. It's very delicious. I like the combination between the pasta and fish roe.

Although they serve lobster with pasta, I still prefer eating this lobster alone than mixing it with the pasta. Personally, I feel that the fresh seafood is best to eat without using any sauce and other ingredients.

Will I go there again? Yes.

Zahra Turkish Ice Cream

Have you ever try Turkish Ice Cream? If not, you may try Turkish Ice Cream at Clarke Quay area (Singapore) or Mall Kelapa Gading (Jakarta - Indonesia).

Turkish Ice Cream is famous in these two countries not only because of their ice cream taste, but also because of their selling performance to attract customer. The seller will do attraction when he serves the ice cream to us. They will pretend to give us the ice cream and I am sure that you can't catch the ice cream. They move very fast. It's a smart idea to make a joke with the customer in this way.

Their ice cream also use special ingredient named Salep. FYI, Salep is a dried orchid root which becomes powder. Salep makes ice cream stickier and not melting very fast like other normal ice cream. This Turkish Ice Cream contains 100% milk.

I try Chocolate flavor of Turkish Ice Cream at Zahra Turkish Ice Cream in Jakarta.

Currently, Zahra Turkish Ice Cream have 21 flavors, such as Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Choco Chips, Mango, Apple, Coffee, Tiramisu, Melon, Pomegranate, Green Tea, Pineapple, Hazelnut, Blueberry, Coconut, Pistachio, Lemon, Kiwi, Banana, Durian, Exotic.

To prove the customer that Turkish Ice Cream is sticky enough, they will hold the ice cream cone upside down. You will be amazed that with the upside down condition, the ice cream will not fall from the cone.

Will I buy again? Yes

Chocolate Ice Cream IDR25.000

Brown Sugar Agarasa

Today I want to show you about my finding 'Brown Sugar Agarasa' on Okinawa Food Fair at Isetan Scotts Supermarket last month.

Curious what is Agarasa? Agarasa is an Okinawan steamed sponge cake. Normally, they cook it with brown sugar, so Japanese people call this cake Brown Sugar Agarasa.

Brown Sugar Agarasa has a sweet taste that comes from Brown Sugar. It's very delicious.

For me, it's best to eat Agarasa when it's still hot.

Brown Sugar Agarasa S$3.50

Lontong CapGoMeh Rusmini

Today I will share with you another delicious and savory Indonesian dish named Lontong CapGomeh.

Lontong CapGomeh is a Chinese Peranakan Indonesian dish which takes on traditional Indonesian dishes.  During the old time, Lontong CapGomeh would be consumed by Peranakan Chinese peoples during Lantern Festival celebration.

Nowadays, Indonesian people treat Lontong CapGomeh as a common dish to eat every day for their breakfast or lunch.

Although this dish is served in most of the Indonesian restaurant, Lontong CapGomeh can also be considered as an Indonesian street food.

To reduce the cost of renting a place, some sellers take the initiative to use their own car to sell Lontong CapGomeh. One of the seller that I find is Lontong CapGomeh Rusmini.

Lontong CapGomeh Rusmini opens at around 8:30AM daily. Over there, I order the complete set of Lontong CapGomeh. Complete set consists of lontong served with opor ayam, sayur lodeh, egg and tofu

This Lontong CapGomeh is delicious. If you don't like too spicy, you would better not put chili. It's because the gravy itself is already a bit spicy.

Nuno Fusion Food

Looking for a cozy and romantic place to hang out with your loved one? You may try to visit Nuno Fusion Food. Locating around MOI - Kelapa Gading (Jakarta), Nuno Fusion Food offers a wide range of Western foods and Asian foods for you to try.

Over there, we order Mozarella Prita and Carnivore. Both dishes are their recommended dishes.

Mozarella Prita contains of fried mozzarella cheese savored in a special sauce. This mozzarella is delicious, but I suggest you not to eat this dish by yourself. It's because the cheese is very tick, so you will easily feel full and can't try other dish that you already order.

Carnivore is a beef supreme pizza. We like this beef pizza so much. This is the best beef pizza which I have tried so far.

Be sure not to miss Carnivore if you visit Nuno Fusion Food. I believed you will not regret it :)

Will I go there again? Yes
